#31 Miguel Ángel Roig – Os Biosbardos founder, Spain
In this episode, we speak to Miguel Ángel Roig, an industrial engineer, innovator and permaculturist who has managed to build an unusual bridge between two worlds that many consider irreconcilable: the advanced technology of Industry 4.0 and the regenerative principles that guide working with the land. To this end, he founded Os Biosbardos, an organic and regenerative vegetable garden in Cambre (A Coruña), where he applies all his engineering expertise to the design of agricultural systems based on permaculture and syntropic agriculture. There, he creates ‘edible forests’ that replicate the patterns of natural ecosystems, fostering resilient spaces that nourish the land, people and the local area. Miguel Ángel tells us how his project also incorporates a vision of open collaboration and natural multi-governance, and builds a community to cultivate food, culture, environmental awareness and networks that function, like his own vegetable garden, as living, diverse and deeply interconnected ecosystems.

Luis Ramón Arrieta, a former BBVA executive, researcher and adviser to the Governing Council of the University of Deusto, provides little-known but essential data for understanding the current situation facing the Basque Country’s innovation ecosystem. We are the region in Europe and internationally that has endured a terrorist conflict for the longest period – 52 years!! During the so-called ‘Years of Lead’, between 150,000 and 180,000 people left the Basque Country, resulting in a significant loss of innovative and entrepreneurial capacity, as well as labour… not to mention the lack of investment; for decades we have been regarded as a high-risk region for investment, which has come at a high economic, human and structural cost. How does this affect us today and looking ahead to the future? What impact does it have on the economy, employment, people and development? Together with Luis Ramón, we take a realistic look at the foundations and windows of opportunity we have to strengthen the region’s entrepreneurial and innovative capacity in the long term. Known as the ‘twenty-something mayor’ on TikTok, Kike is doing an extraordinary job of implementing innovative initiatives and sharing the whole process on social media. He tells us about the gradual journey he has taken to assume leadership in this rural area and gives us details of all his projects – both public ones and those he undertakes as a freelancer – all with the same aim: to achieve the common good.
He has gained international recognition, becoming the first Spanish politician to receive the “Politician of the Year 2025” award from the youth leadership network One Young World, which highlights the extraordinary nature of his career, given that he comes from a village with fewer than 100 inhabitants.

He has gained international recognition, becoming the first Spanish politician to receive the “Politician of the Year 2025” award from the youth leadership network One Young World, which highlights the extraordinary nature of his career, given that he comes from a village with fewer than 100 inhabitants.
