From Policy to Practice: Social Innovation and Systemic Transformative Governance Boosting Science, Technology and Innovation Through Living Labs
This research provides a comprehensive understanding of how SI contributes to the evolution of next-generation Living Labs, identifying key governance models, co-creation mechanisms and multi-stakeholder engagement strategies that enhance policy adaptability and responsiveness to local challenges. The findings will likely reveal best practices in integrating SI into policy design and implementation, offering insights into effective collaboration among public, private, academic and civil society actors (quadruple or n-helix cooperation).
Restorative transitions at the crossroads: Multi-actor experiences of leveraging living labs
This study explores transformative governance as a means to foster individual and collective responsibility for climate action. It examines the triple transition (green, digital and social) and human impact in the Anthropocene, highlighting collaborative, multi-actor strategies. Emphasising citizen and community participation, it shows how living labs and regional innovation ecosystems can drive sustainable and regenerative solutions, building more resilient urban, peri-urban and rural futures.

Inspired by EUvsVirus, this chapter focuses on the Academia Diffusion Experiment (ADE) with more than 40 scholars and practitioners around the globe, who transform practice into science through co-creating, co-evolving, and co-dreaming. Universities in Transition: The 6i Model for Strategic Governance and Management
The 6i Model (Caro-Gonzalez, 2019) offers an archetype for research management to devise and implement integrative institutional strategies by combining six dimensions that start with ‘i’: internationalisation, interdisciplinarity, intersectorality, impact, innovation and inclusion. Social Innovation in Spain, China and Russia: Key Aspects of Development
As traditional methods of governance are unable to promptly respond to the conglomerate of issues brought about by system-wide changes and modernity, social innovation is seen as a promising alternative. Its uptake, however, is facilitated and hindered by a variety of factors. Using Spain, China, and Russia as country cases, this article explicates the findings of a systems-based comparative analysis on the drivers and barriers to the development of social innovations as effective tools in addressing social problems. In depth research projects carried out at national or regional levels provides the background knowledge to analyze the scope, size, trajectory, goals and target groups of the initiatives, as well as the geographical, historical and socio-economic frameworks and environments of the social innovations studied.

Factors influencing the inclusion of vulnerable immigrants of foreign origin: an analysis of integration enterprises in the Basque Country as a means of entering the labour market and achieving social inclusion
This paper forms part of a study carried out between 2011 and 2014 on the process of integrating migrant workers, based on the capabilities approach and structured: 1. around three key aspects of the process: determining factors, enabling conditions, and outcomes or achievements; 2. using quantitative and qualitative methods and taking into account the views of those involved in the process (managers of support organisations, specialists and migrant workers); and 3. focusing on the areas of life where social integration enterprises concentrate their efforts (personal, economic and employment and educational).
Basque social integration enterprises and their sponsoring organisations as an example of best practice in the social and labour market integration of the most vulnerable immigrant groups
This paper aims to highlight the initiatives undertaken by both integration-focused organisations and their sponsoring bodies with a view to optimising the social and labour market integration of the most disadvantaged people of foreign origin. Whilst it is true that international migrants do not constitute a specific group within the range of groups targeted by these organisations, it is nonetheless important to note that there is an undeniable number of people not born in this country who find themselves in vulnerable situations, for whom such schemes represent an optimal means of improving their circumstances.

On 6 March 2024, the Joint Research Centre hosted an exploratory workshop on the synergies of territorial innovation and digital transformation. This workshop aimed to identify research questions and knowledge gaps. This is crucial for supporting EU policies for regional and local transitions, particularly in the context of digital transformation and its contribution to territorial innovation. It brought together digital technology, governance and innovation experts to explore collaborative opportunities.
Guide to incorporating a gender perspective into teaching and research
This Guide, the result of collaborative work involving some 60 members of the academic community and led by María Silvestre Cabrera (Head of Equality at the University of Deusto, Principal Investigator of the Deusto Social Values Team and member of the Interdisciplinary Gender Research Platform), is intended as a tool to help teaching staff and researchers incorporate a gender perspective into academic activities and university life.
